Residents of Anmore and Belcarra have got sustainability in the bag.
This past weekend the 1st Anmore Scouts and a local youth group helped hand deliver reusable shopping bags to over 650 homes in the Village of Anmore to support the use of reusable shopping bags in their community. The Village of Belcarra residents will receive similar shopping bags later in the month in conjunction with a new recycling and trash disposal plan they are implementing for Village residents. The project was spearheaded by Anmore resident Tracy Green after receiving an email about a similar initiative taking place in the interior of BC. The project was brought forward to Anmore and Belcarra council in the summer and was given full support by Mayor and Council of both municipalities. The bag delivery came just one day after Mayors and Councillors at a Metro Vancouver Board meeting voted to press the provincial government to ban disposable shopping bags. While Metro Vancouver can’t enforce any type of bag ban without provincial support, perhaps these type of grass roots initiatives will send a clear message to the BC government that residents of BC want to see action taken to reduce the use of disposable plastics. "In BC alone we consume more than 1.5 billion single-use bags in one year and there has to be a point where people decide enough is enough and make a conscious effort to change their habits," Green said. She added that when she reads stories about turtles choking on plastic bags, or a plastic mass the size of Texas floating in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, she wonders how anyone could call plastic bags convenient. The bags handed out as part of this sustainability project were generously sponsored by Carbon Friendly Solutions and The Ethical Funds Company. Each nylon sack, called a ChicoBag,is lightweight and compact and can easily fit in a pocket or purse. The bags open to hold nine kilograms (20 pounds) of groceries and come with a one-year warranty and a built-in carabiner.
